Milan - Italian cyclist Ivan Basso, who has won the Giro d'Italia twice, is to have an operation after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. "I will undergo surgery tomorrow and it will be a great day. Professor [Francesco] Montorsi will reconsider my condition after the surgery.

There is great optimism and I feel serene," he told Gazzetta TV. The Varese-born cyclist was riding for the Tinkoff-Saxo team in the Tour de France when the diagnosis was announced after a check up at Milan's San Raffaele Hospital. "All my team mates, above all Alberto Contador, have been supporting me. Cycling is a beautiful world, made up of good people. One strives on the bicycle to beat the others, but later we are all united, especially in difficult times. I wish to thank you all, everything will be fine," he said. (AGI)
