Caracas (Venezuela) - A study of the Central University of Venezuela estimates that in 2017 the rate of malnutrition regarding school-age children will increase by 3% compared to 2016, and will reach between 350 and 380 thousand children. The lack of food is due to insufficient sowing in 2016 and the lack of resources to import food.

According to data collected by Fides, there are 3.2 million children under 5 years of age in Venezuela, and among these 12% will suffer from severe acute malnutrition in 2017. The problem will also affect pregnant women, the elderly, the mentally ill and detainees. The serious economic crisis that Venezuela is going through reports levels of uncontrollable inflation, a sharp drop in GDP and the lack of food and basic necessities. The Country produces only 30% of the food it needs and to import what is missing it will need $ 900 million per month this year. (AP) (Agenzia Fides)
