Luanda - Only 30 percent of Angolans have access to electricity despite growing demand and an increase in the availability of power. "The country has seen a sharp increase in power consumption in recent years, thanks to an increase in energy production and an extension of the distribution network," said government consultant for the electricity sector, Miguel Barreto.

He told a conference in Luanda that forecasts to 2025, "predict further strong growth in energy demand by businesses and citizens". The government will have to invest with the help of private concerns to "create an energy system that meets national demand for energy in a safe and sustainable way", he said. It also needed to focus on renewable energy. Investment is also needed in the transmission network, which is among the most underdeveloped on the continent. (AGI)
