Johannesburg - Oscar Pistorius will not be released from jail on Friday, as expected. South Africa's Justice Minister Michael Masutha blocked procedures for granting house arrest for good behaviour, after only 10 months of imprisonment, to the paralympic athlete, until the committee examining claims for such release issues its opinion.
The athlete was sentenced to five years of imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend. On Aug. 8, the prison authorities of Kgosi Mampuru II, where 'Blade Runner, is an inmate, had announced their intention of releasing him on Aug. 21 after ten months of imprisonment, which is one sixth of the sentence.
Nevertheless, "it seems that the June 5 decision to release him has been taken too hastily, during a period when the indicted athlete was not yet eligible for this benefit", said a spokesperson of the Ministry, without announcing another date for the next decision to be taken. (AGI)
