Milan - Thailand has to have "food security and sustainable development among [its] national priorities," said Chavalit Chookajorn, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, at the opening of the country's National Day at Expo 2015.

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was welcomed by Italys' Maurizio Martina, Minister of Agricultural, Environmental and Forestry Policies. The permanent secretary went on: "Thailand applies the 'Philosophy of the King of the Sufficiency Economy', a doctrine that highlights moderation, good sense and caution, which has become a source of inspiration for sustainability in every walk of life." The country aims to produce 20 percent of its energy by 2030 from renewable resources, linking food and energy security. The minister praised the educational aspect of Thailand's pavilion, which features sustainability and innovation, and stressed the strong commercial relations between the countries. "I believe that the free exchange between the European Union and Asia will be beneficial for both regions, above all in the agrifood industry." He said this was a market of 600 million people. It was important to fight hunger. "The 'Zero Hunger 2030' target must be achieved with the joint commitment of the international community and our two countries." Celebrations continued with a performance on the theme "Soil and water culture" and a demonstration of Thai Boxing by champion Buakaw Banchamek.
