Rome - Alice Sabatini, 18, from Montalto di Castro, has been crowned the new Miss Italy. She is keen on basketball, is 1.78 m tall, with brown eyes and - unlike the other 32 finalists - has short brown hair.

She was crowned at Jesolo on Sunday evening during a show hosted by Simona Ventura and broadcast on La7. She won after a final round in which she appeared to retain the upper hand, and prevailed over Letizia Moschin (Veneto) and Vincenza Botti (Campania), who came second and third respectively. Alice had already been selected as Miss Cinema, Miss Beauty Company and Miss Diva and Donna. Her victory as Miss Italy came on the birthday of one of cinema's greatest stars, Sophia Loren. For the previous three years, the crown had been won by girls from Sicily (Giusy Buscemi, Gulia Areana and the outgoing Miss Italy, Clarissa Marchese). The contest, organised by Patrizia Mirigliani, saw more than 10,000 girls enrol for the selection process - a record number. Ever since she was elected Miss Lazio, Alice had been a favourite to win Miss Italy. She now embarks on a 'new' life. She was crowned by Claudio Amendola, who made up the three-man jury along with Joe Bastianich and Vladimir Luxuria, each of whom acted as tutors to 11 finalists. UC Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero made a guest appearance, cracking a few jokes. Other guests included Morgan, Giusy Ferreri and Baby K, along with Francesco Facchinetti, and Pippo Pelo in the Radio Kiss Kiss box. The Miss Italy event also was popular on social networks, with the hashtag #missitalia trending on Twitter, the fifth most popular hashtag at a global level. The La7 television show netted a 5.12 percent share, with 857,000 people tuned in, more or less in line with the previous year. Other national titles were awarded in the run-up to Sunday's finals: Miss Cotonella to Viola Martina Porta; Miss Miluna to Anita Roncari; Miss Sport Lotto to Letizia Moschin; Miss Rocchetta Bellezza to Noemi Bosco; Miss Equilibra to Valeria Valentini; Miss Eleganza Joseph Ribkoff to Chiara Giuffrida; Miss Sorriso Blanx to Francesca Busti; Miss Simpatia Interflora and Miss Sorrisi e Canzoni to Ginevra Bertolani; Miss Curvy Keyra' went to Vincenza Botti, who was also selected as the voice of Radio Kiss Kiss. Miss Kia was chosen by an Internet poll, with the title going to Martina Asia Galvagno. (AGI)
