Up until recently, very few people outside the country knew about Gabala.

Set in rolling hills, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful areas of Azerbaijan.

“This is the year of multi-culturalism in Azerbaijan. We love to represent a variety of cultures at our festival and we’re very proud of this,” said Farhad Badalbeyli, the festival’s artistic director.

Members of the Flamenco Dance Company are taking part in the event.

One of the group commented: “The beautiful thing, when you arrive to a new place, you’re a little bit nervous, what’s the public going to be like?”

Azerbaijan has also been showcasing its own ethnic music – with an evening of Mugham, a UNESCO protected art-form.

The audience enjoyed famous folk songs and the sound of unique Azerbaijani, traditional instruments.

“It’s a charge of energy for the future when young musicians can take part in such a prestigious international music festival,” said Polad Bülbüloğlu, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia and artist.

“The atmosphere here really brings forth the spirit of kindness and friendship between all people and this is sorely needed in the world today.”

This year’s festival took place from 30 July to 5 August. (Euronews)
