Turin - The new Fiat 500 was unveiled in Turin on Thursday by Luca Napolitano, the head of Fiat in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa area. Fiat-Chrysler Automobile's CEO, Sergio Marchionne, was present for the event, held in Fiat's historic "Lingotto" site.

"An icon is not changed, it's renovated. We redesigned 1900 components, almost 40 percent of the total, but even more than before, it's a Fiat 500," Napolitano stated. "We worked on its design, ecology, infotainment, safety, and opened a new frontier in customization. Retail prices will be in line with current levels: in Italy these will start at 13,500 euros. Sales will begin in Italy immediately, then in Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, and Switzerland. The right-side steering wheel will follow in September, alongside full worldwide roll-out," he said. "I don't think the Fiat 500 has competitors. It's a unique car, and I don't mean to brag when I say that," Marchionne commented, adding "People buy it because it's a Fiat 500." Asked whether a 5-door model could be in the offing, Marchionne replied: "There's room for that too. It's clear that widening the available options has an impact on models in other segments." (AGI)
