Brazil’s victorious 1970 World Cup winning captain, Carlos Alberto, has died at the age of 72 after suffering a heart attack.

The defender played for his country 53 times when they were the uncontested finest side on the planet. He scored the fourth goal in the 1970 final, a goal that has gone down in legend as one of the greatest ever, a nine-man move crowned with a thumping drive from the captain, sealing Brazil’s third win in the competition, and giving them ownership of the Jules Rimet trophy outright.

In club football he played for Fluminense, Santos, Flamengo and New York Cosmos. (Euronews)
