An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 has been reported off the coast of northern California, the US Geological Survey said. The readings from the USGS reported it hitting just before 7 am local time. The initial report of 6.8 magnitude was revised down to 6.5.

The National Tsunami Warning Center stated there was no tsunami warning or advisory.

It was centred about 165km in the Pacific Ocean west of Ferndale, at a depth of around 10km. The mayor of the town, with a population of 1,300, said that he had not heard of any damage from the tremors, adding ‘it wasn’t that bad at all.’

California’s northern coast is one of the state’s most seismically active zones. (Euronews)
