On Day 5 of the Rio Olympics, Spain’s Mireia Belmonte won the 200 metres butterfly, making her the first Spanish woman to win an Olympic swimming gold medal. Australian Madeline Groves took silver and Japan’s world champion Natsumi Hoshi won bronze.

Brazil has not had the easiest of run-in as the opening ceremony approaches for the XXXI Olympiad. The Games are taking place against a backdrop of social unrest, unpaid workers and a political scandal engulfing the government.
