The South Korean, ranked 34th, beat France’s Alexandre Bardenet after defeating the two-time world champion Nikolai Novosjolov in the semi-final.
Bardenet, who’s ranked 75th, fought fiercely but wavered in the final moments – losing 13 to 15. The 26 year-old Frenchman had never before reached a World Cup podium in the senior category.
In the semis, Bardenet had beat his compatriot Jean-Michel Lucenay, who now shares the third spot with Novosjolov.
The FIE Grand Prix series is next due to stop in the Mexican city of Cancún for sabre, starting next week. (Euronews)
