Amman - Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged Libyan authorities to investigate the alleged torture on the inmates of a Tripoli prison, including Saadi Gaddafi, son of the slain dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

The man was extradited from Niger to Libya last year and imprisoned at al-Hadba, a prison run by an Islamist militia coalition. The blindfolded Gaddafi appeared in a video released online on Aug. 2 as he was being tortured while dressed in green overalls. He was slapped in the face, and then tied to a metal easel while a bearded jailer struck the soles of his feet. The prosecutors' office in Tripoli informed that an investigation has begun to identify and punish the jailers who are seen in the video after making sure of their identity. "The graphic video that seems to show prisoners being beaten raises serious concerns about the methods used to interrogate Saadi Kadhafi and other detainees at al-Hadba prison," said Joe Stork, deputy director of the Middle East branch of the HRW. Saadi Gaddafi is the third son of the former dictator and is known to Italians for his short experience with some football clubs, among them Luciano Gaucci's Perugia (where he played one match against Juventus, and was then expelled for doping). He is currently being detained for allegations of having participated in the murder of a Libyan football star of the 80s, Bashir al-Riani. The video was released one week after the death sentence issued by a Libyan tribunal for the dictator's second son, Saif al-Islam, due to his repressive actions and crimes during the 2011 Libyan Spring.
