Rome - Italferr, the engineering company of the Italian State Railways Group, has signed a contract with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) for the extension of the preliminary and detailed design of the rail line that will connect the port of Jeddah, on the Red Sea, to Al Jubail, on the Arabian Sea.
Around 1,300 kilometres of line will traverse Saudi Arabia, linking the two seas that surround the Arabian Peninsula. Italferr will work on the project for 20 months starting in August 2015. Once electrified, the line will allow passenger trains to travel at speeds of up to 350 km/h. The project also includes the stations, stores and maintenance centres. Italferr has been operating in Saudi Arabia since 2013 on the preliminary and detailed design of the connection between Jeddah and the capital Riyadh and on the Saudi Landbridge Railway Project. The FS Group company was awarded the contract in competition with other leading international companies. Italferr has won the appreciation of the Saudi Railway Company - SAR, which is in charge of the project, for the rapidity of its planning and finding of solutions to problems such as high temperatures and how to cross the large areas of sand dunes and rocky stretches of the Saudi desert.
