Chris Froome will lead the Great Britain team as he bids to emulate the feat of compatriot Bradley Wiggins in the Olympic cycling road race on Saturday.

Four years ago, Wiggins followed up becoming the first ever Briton to win the Tour de France by adding Olympic gold on home soil.

Dutch sprinter Dafne Schippers has also been tipped to be one of the stars of the Games.

The 24-year-old, who has single-handedly broken the monopoly of American-Caribbean athletes in women’s sprinting in recent times, will be hoping to shine in Rio.

Teddy Riner has not lost a match since 2010 which begs the question who – if anyone – can outclass the experienced judoka in Brazil?

The Frenchman has been unstoppable in the men’s heavyweight category, toppling everyone in his path en route to seven world titles.

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic will be bidding for his first Olympic title. The 12-time major champion was handed a nightmare first-round draw against former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro, the man who denied him a medal four years ago in London.

In the women’s event, defending champion Serena Williams will open her campaign against Australian Daria Gavrilova.

The 34-year-old is going for a fifth Olympic gold medal, as is her sister Venus who will lock horns with Kirsten Flipkens in the first round. (Euronews)
