Baku (Azerbaijian) - Italy won a gold and bronze medal on Friday at the European Games in Baku, bringing its total to 11, with three golds, six silvers, and two bronzes.

Petra Zublasing set a world record in the women's rifle three positions final, earning the gold and congratulations from the president of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), Giovanni Malago', and the Commanding General of the Carabinieri, Tullio Del Sette. Nino Barilla' came third in the double trap in the afternoon. Sport shooter Niccolo' Campriani watched as his girlfriend Zublasing competed. "I'm happy to have ended strong, without dropping the pace. Niccolo' was there today, it was quite funny when they made him say 'I love you' in Azerbaijani, I even turned around," she said after the final. "Compared to Niccolo', I do everything in black and white while he's more towards grey. Maybe that's why it's a bit easier for me to accept these new rules that reward the intermediate shooter more than the strongest one," Zublasing added. Barilla', for his part, showed great conviction and promises to be a protagonist at the Shooting World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. "I've decided to suspend my postgraduate degree for the time being because I believe things need to be done one at a time in order to do them well," Barilla' stated. "I hope to continue after Rio, as long as I still have my wits about me. Rio is my only goal right now. Everything I'm doing, today's medal, the World Cup victory, and winning at the Olympics, it's all the result of training, that isn't just going there and shooting, it takes technical and physical preparation. It takes time, so I can't do anything else. I'm happy with the way things are, I'll probably finish my degree after Rio," he said. Italian archer Natalia Valeeva qualified for the women's individual quarter-finals after her opponent, the 17-year-old Kosovan athlete Lirije Sahti, withdrew from competition, perhaps daunted by Valeeva's two previous gold medals in Baku. Metteo and Paolo Ingrosso reached the volleyball quarter-finals, which will take place on Saturday, as did Alex Ranghieri and Enrico Rossi, while Laura Giombini and Giulia Toti qualified for the women's semi-finals. Valentino Manfredonia won his boxing quarter-final against Switzerland's Uke Shajli in the 81kg category. Italy's men's water polo team beat Hungary 11-10 and will face Russia on Sunday for fifth place. The women's volleyball team lost 3-0 to Poland. (AGI)
