US jobless figures fall to nine-year low as employment stays stable

Health care, professional and business services,and financial activities are leading the way in the continuing healthy US jobs market, but the overall rate was unchanged in October, at 4.9%.

Net figures are now relatively unchanged since August 2015, with the number of Americans out of work at around 7.9 million.

Job losses or end of short term contracts fell by 218,000, and the number of long term
unemployed remained stable at two million or 25.2% of the total.

Overall the US Bureau of Labour Statistics notes that jobs growth has been at a slower pace for 2016: 181,000 per month, compared with an average monthly increase of 229,000 in 2015.

The average non-farm workweek ranged from 33.6 to 40.8 hours in manufacturing, which saw a slight increase. (Euronews)
