Austin (USA) - The US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has expressed "disappointment" for the abolition of the policy measure that protected the Cubans who arrived in the country, promising to work with the next government of Donald Trump in order to provide "humane treatment" for asylum seekers.

In a statement sent to Fides, the Bishop of the Diocese of Austin (Texas), Mgr. Joe Vasquez, chairman of the Committee on Migration of the Episcopal Conference, pointed out that this "sudden change" decided by outgoing President Barack Obama, will create difficulties for vulnerable groups seeking protection: groups such as Cuban asylum seekers, who almost always consist of children and victims of human trafficking.
